One of the ultimate peaks of this year’s edition of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival was undoubtedly the concerts delivered my this very young gentleman. So it is with tremendous pleasure that we hereby invite him back.
The reputation of the sensational child prodigy from Indonesia, the only 11 year jazz piano virtuoso JOEY ALEXANDER, is spreading quickly across the globe. He has already been endorsed by piano legend Herbie Hancock and has been invited to perform with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center in New York. He is an incredibly exciting musician with a wonderful fresh approach to jazz piano playing. The Standard is proud to be the first venue to have presented him live in this part of the world.
Joey Alexander’s official biography:
Born in 2003 on the Island of Bali, Joey was introduced to Jazz at an early age, listening to Louis Armstrong and Harry Connick. Jr. Joey’s musical talents soon came to the fore when he started learning the keyboards at age 6, studying classical music but his tendency was always to swing. Due to the lack of Jazz education where he lived, Joey began playing Jazz piano mostly by ear at age 7. As his parents regularly took him to jam-sessions where senior musicians in Bali would ask Joey to join, his love of playing Jazz and musical intuition grew.
At 8, the family moved to the city of Jakarta, for Joey to learn and experience more jazz. A sacrifice that allowed him to progress. Not long after that, Joey was invited by UNESCO in Jakarta to play solo piano for the Jazz legend Herbie Hancock. For Joey, the experience marked the start of further explorations in this true American Art. He would point out that everything he listens to directs his musical development in some way. However, he would certainly include Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and John Coltrane. He also has a special affinity to trumpet players such as Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan and Wynton Marsalis.
By age 9, he already played in Jazz festivals and major Jazz events overseas. In June 2013, Joey brought home Grand Prix Award after winning Master-Jam festival-contest in Odessa, Ukraine, participated by 43 talented Jazz pros from 17 countries. The story about Joey has been written by major media in big part of Asia, famous jazz magazine in Moscow and The Good News with The Ellen DeGeneres show. Recently, Joey made a successful debut appearance at the International Java Jazz Festival with his trio and was recognised by the founder of the festival. Now at 10, he is invited by Mr. Wynton Marsalis to perform at Jazz at Lincoln Center with JALC on May 1 for a Gala Concert. Recently, Joey connected with famous Danish Jazz Pianist/Composer/Producer, Mr. Niels Lan Doky who invited Joey to perform at his high profile Jazz club in Copenhagen, Denmark, The Standard. Another great honour to work under a well-seasoned musician. Jazz has become spiritual to Joey and he thanks the Lord for his musical talent which he intends to share it with the world. Also for the young generation to get into Jazz

Joey Alexanders officielle biografi:
