I Clint Eastwoods fine film om legenden Charlie Parker, ”Bird”, havde McPhersons altsaxspil en fremtrædende rolle; den gav simpelthen lyd til Forest Whitakers præstation som Parker, og modtog fine omtaler verden over. McPherson var i mange år tæt knyttet til Charles Mingus, og han var en ofte benyttet sideman, når den autentiske lyd stod i centrum.
