Youn Sun Nah/Ulf Wakenius at Jazzhus Montmartre

The South Korean singer Youn Sun Nah has visited Copenhagen on several occasions. Those who have had the pleasure of experiencing her live can tell of an artist, who engages 100 percent with the music and lets it consume her. She has one of those rare voices of nature that sounds beautiful in all keys and tempi, and whose delivery seizes hold of one’s soul. Youn Sun Nah has a special invading melancholic sound which is highly rare among contemporary jazz vocalists.
It is no exaggeration calling the Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius a virtuoso on his instrument. Since he back in the mid-70’s appeared on the Swedish jazz fusion scene, he has been part of the absolute elite and his long-standing membership of Oscar Peterson’s trio speaks for itself. Wakenius has in his solo career focused mainly on the acoustic guitar, and his big musicality is outlined at its best in this eminent duo collaboration, where the focus is on own and often extremely personal versions of jazz standards. De, der har haft glæden af at opleve hende live, kan berette om en kunstner, der går 100% ind i musikken og lader den opsluge hende. Hun har en sjælden naturstemme, der klinger smukt og overbevisende i alle tonearter og tempi, og hvis foredrag går ind og tager fat i sjælen. Youn Sun Nah har en særlig indtrængende melankolsk klang, som er sjælden blandt nutidige jazzvokalister.
Det er ingen overdrivelse at kalde den svenske guitarist Ulf Wakenius for en virtuos på sit instrument. Siden han i midten af 70’erne viste sig på den svenske fusionsjazz-scene har han tilhørt den absolutte elite, og hans årelange medlemskab af Oscar Petersons trio taler vist for sig selv. Wakenius har i sin solokarriere overvejende fokuseret på den akustiske guitar, og hans store musikalitet tegnes vel ikke bedre end i dette fornemme duosamarbejde, hvor der fokuseres på egne og ofte uhyre personlige udgaver af jazzstandards. Det er frydefuld musik!
